Established in 1909, it was originally named "Henan Library." In 1953, it was officially called the "Henan Provincial Library." A new library building was completed and opened in 1989.
As of December 2016, the Henan Provincial Library had a total building area of 29,500 square meters, with over 1,200 reading seats, 17 institutional departments, and 183 staff members. The library's collection totaled 3.432769 million volumes (items), including 334,730 volumes of ancient books, with 50 TB of digital resources
